The first tourists who came to the Canary Islands arrived here

Although it is the smallest municipality in Tenerife, with a surface area of 8.7 km2, Puerto de la Cruz has attractions such as its protected old town or a large seafront, which is perfect for long quiet walks. It occupies the coastal area of the Orotava Valley and has breathtaking scenery presided over by the 3,718 meter high Teide which can bee seen on the horizon. Its pleasant climate made it the first tourist resort on the Canary Islands, when the British Medical Society recommended it as an ideal location in the nineteenth century. It has temperatures ranging between 22°C and 15°C that make it possible to enjoy the sea, the fresh air and its tranquillity throughout the year.

This coastal town, which has a great tradition of hospitality with more than twenty thousand tourist beds, has hosted such renowned visitors as Alexander Von Humboldt, Agatha Christie, William Wilde, Michael Jackson, André Breton and The Beatles, among others.

Puerto de la Cruz has been considered to be a Place of National Touristic Interest since 1955 due to its long history as a centre for rest and relaxation.

The leisure activities on offer include its famous carnivals, attractions such as Loro Parque, Lago Martianez or the Botanical Gardens which were founded in 1788.
